Hitchcock was great at hiding things from the screen to evoke the audience's imagination.

 

Other techniques:

 

  • Poke the Tiger - Keep the danger active with constant reminders.  The danger is almost provoked, raising our anticipation.

  • Incompetence - Characters make small mistakes in the heat of the moment, milking the suspense for the audience.

  • Precise Plan - Builds a false expectation.
